Medication

Only a nurse licensed to practice nursing in the state of Massachusetts may administer medication in school. These regulations apply to all medications, including over the counter and prescription. All medications, even over the counter medicine, must be accompanied by a DOCTOR’S WRITTEN ORDER for dispensing medicines and parent/guardian written consent. Parents must deliver medication in the original pharmacy container or dispensing packaging to the school Health Office. Students may NOT carry medication in school or on the bus. If medications must be administered in school the following procedures need to be followed. Have your doctor write orders for the school to dispense medication giving the following information:

  • Diagnosis
  • Name of drug to be given, dosage, and any side effects of which the staff should be aware.
  • The duration of the prescription

Deliver the Physician’s written order (or fax it) along with written parent consent and the medication to the nurses in the Health Office. Medications must remain in locked storage in school and cannot be taken home at night.
