Media Center

The Boston Renaissance Charter Public School Media Center serves as an integral part of the Renaissance learning community.  The Media Center staff serves students and faculty by providing materials and resources in a variety of formats for curriculum enhancement, instructional support, and personal reading enjoyment.  The librarians also instruct and assist students in developing skills in the access and use of information.  Online resources are available at all levels. The Media Center is fully automated and provides on-line access to books and media.

The Media Center is located on the first floor and is managed by the Librarian and Media Specialist, Ms. Laura Stroessner, and the Library and Media Assistant, Mrs. Angela Shariff-Sabir.

Mission

The Boston Renaissance Charter Public School Library & Media Services program serves as both a resource and catalyst to improve instruction, to engage the community, and to broaden every student’s education and imagination. Library & Media services impact student achievement by collaborating with teachers to integrate twenty-first century skills and information literacy into the school curriculum. The Media Center provides access to the latest information technology tools, a carefully selected and extensive collection of books and audio/visual resources, and a flexible space to encourage collaboration, celebration, and communication among students, teachers, and parents that is integrated into the larger school agenda.

Vision

The Boston Renaissance Charter Public School Media Center’s vision is to develop every child’s ability to read, to comprehend, and to explore the world by providing vital resources to the whole school community — students, teachers, and parents — that will impact and contribute to improved student performance.

We believe the Media Center should…

  • Encourage students’ literacy and enjoyment of literature by:
    • Providing all students with a rich, relevant, and interesting selection of fiction and nonfiction books, magazines, audio/visual and web-based resources
    • Arranging read-alouds for students by staff, peers, and visitors both in person and virtually
    • Offering space for independent reading, research and study as well as collaborative and creative group investigations of literature
  • Support teachers’ instructional and professional needs by:
    • Providing books, magazines, audio/visual and web-based resources that are aligned with the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks.
    • Working with classroom teachers to ensure the appropriate usage of the library’s resources to enhance teaching and learning.
    • Offering space for staff development and collaboration.
  • Prepare students for future success by:
    • Teaching information literacy skills in a relevant context that helps students become better critical thinkers and problem solvers.
    • Developing students’ global perspective to be able to compete, communicate, and collaborate in a diverse environment.
    • Empowering them to be producers of new knowledge and understanding from existing knowledge
  • Be a school-wide common learning space by:
    • Creating a comfortable, multi-purpose, resource-rich, welcoming environment for students, teachers, parents, and visitors.
